Mary Helen (Matthews) Moon

July 26, 1935 — July 7, 2020

Mary Helen (Matthews) Moon, (1935-2020) age 84, of Waxahachie, Texas passed away on July 7, 2020. Mary Helen was born and raised in Mineola, Texas. She was valedictorian of her 1953 class. She graduated from Baylor University in May of 1956 and married Austin Dale Moon. They went to Fort Worth for Dale’s seminary experience. They were blessed by their two sons, Mark Moon and Brian Moon. Following two pastorates, Dale felt called to be an army chaplain to minister to our soldiers in the Viet Nam war. His very successful chaplaincy took the family to various stateside as well as foreign assignments. Following his passing in McKinney, Texas, Mary Helen later and very unexpectedly met and married Dr. Jerry Lemon, a fellow Baylor graduate as well as a pastor, Lifeway editor, author and world traveler. Jerry had known Colonel Moon at Baylor many years ago, but he and Mary Helen do not recall ever having met which was very surprising to them both. During her lifetime Mary Helen was a double certified teacher. She taught most of the elementary grades, to include ESL, as well as accounting and business law in the secondary level. While teaching second grade in Stuttgart, Germany, she received the outstanding teacher award. She was active in her memberships, belonging to Officers’ Wives Clubs, her church, Federated Women’s Clubs and her private social clubs and groups. Above all she belonged to the army of the dear Lord. Mary Helen was blessed to visit the Holy Land two times. These trips were amazing and unspeakable blessings. She went once with Dale and once alone when a widow. Her survivors are husband, Dr. Jerry Lemon; two sons Mark Moon (Teresa) and Brian Moon (Tracy); grandson, Dr. Matthew Moon (Natalie) and granddaughters Dr. Erin Brunton (Justin), Erika Staif (Zac), Sara Moon and Courtney Moon; and great grandchildren Adrienne, Ben and Alex; brother Wade Matthews (Rebekah); four nieces and a nephew; step-children Brent Lemon (Marie Mosentseva), Wayne Lemon, and Cheryl Allen; and step-granddaughter Mia Lemon. Services will be at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Mineola, Texas on Friday, July 10, 2020.
